The Blue Badge scheme has been extended to people with “hidden disabilities”

If you are caring for someone with a “hidden disability”, such as a learning disability, autism or a mental health condition, you may now be entitled to a Blue Badge. A Blue Badge allows you to park in some places other people can’t and sometimes get free or discounted parking.

The new criteria, which came into force on August 30th, now includes people who:

  • cannot undertake a journey without there being a risk of serious harm to their health or safety, or that of any other person
  • cannot undertake a journey without it causing them considerable psychological distress
  • have very considerable difficulty when walking (both the physical act and experience of walking).

If you think you or the person you care for may now meet the new criteria you can apply for a Blue Badge by either contacting Bristol City Council on 0117 922 2000, South Gloucestershire Council on 0117 862 300 or visiting: https://www.gov.uk/apply-blue-badge
